Joining the Network: Directory Standards & Requirements
(For spiritual directors seeking a listing on CatholicSDNetwork.org)
To promote integrity, trust, and fidelity for those seeking spiritual direction, the Network requires listed directors to meet established formation and ecclesial standards. We welcome lay directors, religious, and clergy who share a commitment to Christ-centered accompaniment in full communion with the Magisterium of the Catholic Church.
Minimum Listing Requirements
1. Formal Catholic Formation & Certification
Directors must have completed a structured Catholic spiritual direction formation or certification program appropriate to their level of practice. Formation and certification represent distinct levels of preparation and may involve different requirements, including coursework, supervised practicum, and institution-specific formation.
- Required Documentation: A certificate, diploma, letter of completion, or equivalent documentation demonstrating completion of a Catholic spiritual direction program.
2. Ecclesial Standing & Reference
Directors must be practicing Catholics in good standing with the Church.
- For Lay Directors: A brief letter of reference or endorsement from a parish pastor or practicing Catholic spiritual director confirming good standing and active sacramental participation.
- For Clergy or Religious: A brief Statement of Suitability or letter from their ordinary or religious superior confirming faculties and good standing.
3. Adherence to Pastoral Boundaries & Ethics
Directors must agree to practice within clear pastoral boundaries, recognizing that spiritual direction is distinct from clinical psychotherapy, mental health counseling, or legal advice.
- Required Agreement: A signed CatholicSD Network Code of Ethics & Fidelity Agreement (completed within the online submission form), affirming fidelity to Catholic teaching and appropriate confidentiality.
How to Submit Your Listing
If you meet these requirements, please gather your documentation and complete the online submission form. Submissions are reviewed for compliance with the Directory Listing Requirements prior to profile activation.
Join the Network
The Network is a free directory for Catholic spiritual directors who desire to make their services easier to find. There is no fee to be listed.
Spiritual directors who wish to join the Network will be asked to provide information about their formation, location, diocese, areas of accompaniment, availability, and whether they offer spiritual direction in person, virtually, or both.
Directors will also be asked to affirm the Catholic Standards of the Network, including fidelity to the teachings of the Catholic Church, participation in the sacramental life of the Church, ongoing spiritual direction, and appropriate boundaries in practice.
