How to Discern a Spiritual Director

Before contacting a director, take time to pray and ask the Holy Spirit for guidance. Consider whether you feel drawn to the person’s formation, approach, and areas of accompaniment. After speaking with a potential director, notice what remains in prayer: peace, freedom, clarity, or perhaps uneasiness or constriction. Give yourself permission to discern rather than feeling obligated to continue simply because you made initial contact.

Spiritual direction is a relationship of accompaniment, and it may take time to determine whether a particular director is a good fit.
